Overview:
The University of Maryland Medical Center is an innovative teaching hospital in Baltimore that
provides a full range of health services to people throughout Maryland and the Mid-Atlantic region.
It is a national and regional referral center for trauma, cancer care, cardiac care, neurocare,
women's and children's health and organ transplants. Established in 1823, the Medical Center is
one of the nation's first teaching hospitals.

- Minimally Invasive Surgery: Performing
complex surgeries through tiny incisions to help patients recover more quickly. Comprehensive
robotic surgery program offers state-of-the-art
treatment for heart, urological, gynecological and gastrointestinal disorders.
- Comprehensive Cancer Care: Providing
individualized treatment plans for patients with all types of cancer, utilizing the latest in
radiation therapy, surgical procedures and targeted drug therapies. The Greenebaum Cancer Center
is one of only a select few National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers in the U.S.
- Pediatrics: Caring for critically
ill children and those with chronic conditions, such as asthma, diabetes and cardiac problems.
The Hospital for Children combines state-of-the-art medicine with family-centered care and is a
recognized leader in developing and providing innovative treatments for childhood illnesses.
- Organ Transplantation: Providing
a full range of transplant services, with one of the largest programs in the country for
kidney and pancreas transplant and
excellence in heart, lung and liver transplantation.
- Cardiovascular Care: Providing comprehensive
and innovative medical and surgical care for people with all types of cardiovascular problems,
including those who need multiple-vessel heart bypass surgery with the da Vinci
robot or a lifesaving heart pump for severe heart failure.
- Neurocare: Nationally recognized
program for patients with Parkinson's Disease
and other movement disorders. Created Maryland's first Brain
Attack team to rapidly evaluate and treat stroke patients with clot-dissolving drugs.
- Critical Care: Providing the
highest level of care with intensivists and specialized nurses for the sickest patients in 10
state-of-the-art critical care/intensive care units.
- Trauma Care: Providing lifesaving
care to the most severely injured patients at the world-renowned University of Maryland R Adams
Cowley Shock Trauma Center. It is the first and only integrated trauma and critical care hospital
in the nation.
- Radiation Therapy:
First in region to offer Trilogy, the
fastest, most precise and versatile radiation therapy system available to treat cancer patients.
Developed a new technology called RapidArc
that cuts the average treatment time to two minutes or less.
- Training and Innovation: Developed the Maryland
Advanced Surgical Training, Research and Innovation (MASTRI) Center, one of the nation's first
hospital-based training facilities to advance research and training in minimally invasive
surgery.

- The Leapfrog Group has named the Medical Center as a "Top
Hospital of the Decade" for patient safety and quality of care. UMMC has been on the national
Leapfrog Top Hospitals list -- the gold standard for hospital performance -- every year since 2006.
- The University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Cancer Center won National
Cancer Institute designation because of its outstanding research and patient care.
- UMMC's Cardiac Care and
Progressive Care Units
have received the Beacon Award for Critical Care Excellence from the American Association of
Critical Care Nurses.
- UMMC made the 2010 U.S.
News and World Report's "Best Hospitals" List in nine specialty areas.
- The University of Maryland Breast Center has been designated a Breast
Imaging Center of Excellence by the American College of Radiology.
- The Medical Center was the first hospital in the nation to receive the newly created
Outstanding Facility Achievement in Perioperative
Nursing award from the Association of Perioperative Registered Nurses.
- The American Heart Association has recognized UMMC for two years in a row for its efforts to
promote the health of its employees with a Fit-Friendly
Company Gold Achievement Award.
- UMMC won two awards for environmental excellence from Practice
Greenhealth, a national membership organization for health care facilities committed to
environmentally responsible operations.
- The Medical Center achieved Magnet
Designation in recognition of the hospital's nursing excellence.
